You're the Bee's Knees

You're the Bee's Knees

I thought it would only be appropriate to celebrate the launch of my new website with a description and re-introduction of my very first pattern. Do you get it yet?

This pattern was my flagship design that launched my Freudian Stitch Etsy store in August 2016. I had designed other patterns and to be honest, it's not like I have an affinity for bees. In fact, I'm pretty afraid of them and am paranoid when they're around; I've never been stung before and fear that I'm allergic. So how did I end up designing this pattern, and how has it become my most popular pattern in the store? The latter I can't really explain, but it's quite validating considering the former.

In case you haven't gathered yet, I love puns. I distinctly remember the moment of inspiration for this pattern. I was walking the streets of my city on my way to school contemplating puns (as any regular graduate student in a completely unrelated field does), and it just came to me: what if I used an old anatomy-style listing to portray the fact that you are the bee's knees? You're not just cool, awesome, and endearing, you are physically the bee's knees. I absolutely had to cross stitch that.

I've had people tell me how it takes them a moment to get the pun and they feel silly, stupid, or slow for having it not sting them in the face right away. But that's exactly the effect I was going for. Instead of those puns that are so obvious, this one takes a moment to really sink in. Quite contrary, I imagine, to the realization of a bee sting. When you do realize it though, it's rewarding because you figured it out and endearing that someone went through such lengths to tell you how great you are.

What's your favorite pun? Did it take you a moment to understand the bee? To purchase this pattern on Etsy, click here to visit the listing and start stitching today. And if you can't get enough of puns, check out my pun set. Happy stitching!
